Create a virtual MySQL database for TaxJar data in CData Connect (or Connect Server) and work with live TaxJar data in MySQL Workbench.
MySQL Workbench allows users to administer MySQL environments and gain better visibility into databases. When paired with CData Connect (on-premise or Connect Server), you get live access to TaxJar data as if it were a MySQL database. This article shows how to create a virtual database for TaxJar in Connect and work with live TaxJar data in MySQL Workbench.
Create a Virtual MySQL Database for TaxJar Data
CData Connect uses a straightforward, point-and-click interface to connect to data sources and generate APIs.
- Login to Connect and click Connections.
- Select "TaxJar" from Available Data Sources.
-
Enter the necessary authentication properties to connect to TaxJar.
To authenticate to the TaxJar API, you will need to first obtain the API Key from the TaxJar UI.
NOTE: the API is available only for Professional and Premium TaxJar plans.
If you already have a Professional or Premium plan you can find the API Key by logging in the TaxJar UI and navigating to Account -> TaxJar API. After obtaining the API Key, you can set it in the APIKey connection property.
Additional Notes
- By default, the CData connector will retrieve data of the last 3 months in cases where the entity support date range filtering. You can set StartDate to specify the minimum creation date of the data retrieved.
- If the API Key has been created for a sandbox API account please set UseSandbox to true, but not all endpoints will work as expected. For more information, refer to the TaxJar developer documentation.
- Click Save Changes
- Click Privileges -> Add and add the new user (or an existing user) with the appropriate permissions.
With the virtual database created, you are ready to connect to TaxJar from MySQL Workbench.
Query TaxJar from MySQL Workbench
The steps below outline connecting to the virtual TaxJar database in Connect from MySQL Workbench and issuing basic queries to work with live TaxJar data.
Connect to TaxJar through Connect
- In MySQL Workbench, click to add a new MySQL connection.
- Name the connection (CData Connect).
- Set the Hostname, Port, and Username parameters to connect to the SQL Gateway.
- Click Store in Vault to set and store the password.
- Click Test Connection to ensure the connection is configured properly and click OK.
Query TaxJar Data
- Open the connection you just created (CData Connect).
- Click File -> New Query Tab.
- Write a SQL query to retrieve TaxJar data, like SELECT * FROM taxjardb.Orders;
With access to live TaxJar data from MySQL Workbench, you can easily query and update TaxJar, just like you would a MySQL database. Request a demo of the CData Connect and start working with TaxJar just like a MySQL database today.
