Using the CData ODBC Driver for Sage 50 UK in PyCharm

Connect to Sage 50 UK as an ODBC data source in PyCharm using the CData ODBC Driver for Sage 50 UK.

The CData ODBC Drivers can be used in any environment that supports loading an ODBC Driver. In this tutorial we will explore using the CData ODBC Driver for Sage 50 UK from within PyCharm. Included are steps for adding the CData ODBC Driver as a data source, as well as basic PyCharm code to query the data source and display results.

To begin, this tutorial will assume that you have already installed the CData ODBC Driver for Sage 50 UK as well as PyCharm.

Add Pyodbc to the Project

Follow the steps below to add the pyodbc module to your project.

  1. Click File -> Settings to open the project settings window.
  2. Click Project Interpreter from the Project: YourProjectName menu.
  3. To add pyodbc, click the + button and enter pyodbc.

Connect to Sage 50 UK

You can now connect with an ODBC connection string or a DSN. See the Getting Started section in the CData driver documentation for a guide to creating a DSN on your OS.

Note: Only Sage 50 UK 2012 and above are supported.

The User and Password properties, under the Connection section, must be set to valid Sage 50 UK user credentials. These values will be the same used to log in to the Sage 50 UK software.

Additionally, the URL property, under the Connection section, will need to be set to the address of the company dataset desired. To obtain the address, do the following:

  1. If you have not already done so, open the Sage 50 UK software.
  2. Click Tools -> Internet Options.
  3. Select the SData Settings tab.
  4. Click the Details button next to Sage 50 Accounts. A window is displayed containing a list of company names along with the address to their corresponding datasets.
  5. Set the URL property to the value in the address field next to the company desired.

Below is the syntax for a DSN:

[CData Sage50UK Source] Driver = CData ODBC Driver for Sage 50 UK Description = My Description URL = http://your-server:5493/sdata/accounts50/GCRM/your-address User = Manager

Execute SQL to Sage 50 UK

Instantiate a Cursor and use the execute method of the Cursor class to execute any SQL statement.

import pyodbc cnxn = pyodbc.connect('DRIVER={CData ODBC Driver for Sage50UK};URL = http://your-server:5493/sdata/accounts50/GCRM/your-address;User = Manager;') cursor = cnxn.cursor() cursor.execute("SELECT Name, FinanceBalance FROM TradingAccounts WHERE TradingAccountUUID = 'c2ef66a5-a545-413b-9312-79a53caadbc4'") rows = cursor.fetchall() for row in rows: print(row.Name, row.FinanceBalance)

After connecting to Sage 50 UK in PyCharm using the CData ODBC Driver, you will be able to build Python apps with access to Sage 50 UK data as if it were a standard database. If you have any questions, comments, or feedback regarding this tutorial, please contact us at support@cdata.com.
